Soap Box Derby

Event Rules

  1. Eligibility:
    • Age categories: 7-10, 11-15
  2. Registration:
    • All participants must register by MAY 21st 2025.
    • A nonrefundable registration fee of $20 must be paid upon registration.
    • Each participant must sign a waiver and provide emergency contact information.

 

Soap Car Specifications

  1. Dimensions and Weight:
    • Maximum length: 80 inches.
    • Maximum width: 30 inches.
    • Maximum weight (including the driver): 200 pounds
  2. Construction:
    • Cars must be powered solely by gravity.
    • No motors, engines, or propulsion systems are allowed.
    • The car must have at least three wheels in contact with the ground at all times.
    • Tires must be rubber or plastic, no metal tires allowed.
  3. Safety Features:
    • Each car must have a functional braking system.
    • Steering mechanisms must be robust and controllable.
    • Drivers must wear a helmet and seatbelt during the race.

 

Race Rules

  1. Course:
    • The race will be held on a designated downhill track.
    • The track will have marked start and finish lines.
  2. Race Format:
    • Participants will race in heats determined by age categories.
    • The top racers from each heat will advance to the finals.
    • Winners are determined by the fastest time to the finish line.
  3. Conduct:
    • All participants must conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner.
    • Any deliberate attempt to interfere with other racers will result in disqualification.
    • No modifications are allowed once the car has passed the initial inspection.

 

Inspection and Safety

  1. Pre-Race Inspection:
    • All cars must pass an inspection before being allowed to race.
    • Inspectors will check for adherence to size, weight, and safety regulations.
    • Cars failing the inspection must be modified to comply before racing.
  2. Safety Briefing:
    • All participants must attend a safety briefing on the day of the race.
    • The briefing will cover track layout, race procedures, and emergency protocols.

 

Awards and Prizes

  1. Categories:
    • Prizes will be awarded for the fastest car in each age category.
    • Additional awards may include Best Design, Most Innovative, and Best Team Spirit.
  2. Award Ceremony:
    • The award ceremony will be held immediately following the final race.

Miscellaneous

  1. Weather Policy:
    • The event will proceed in light rain but may be postponed or canceled in severe weather conditions.
    • Participants will be notified of any changes to the schedule.
  2. Code of Conduct:
    • The Lions Club reserves the right to remove any participant or spectator for disruptive behavior.
    • All decisions made by race officials are final.
  3. Disputes:
    • Any disputes or issues must be brought to the attention of race officials immediately.
    • The race committee will review and make a final ruling on all disputes.
